Move to Canada -Day 6

October 23, 2011: Bozeman, MT - Calgary, AB

Today was my favorite day of driving.  Not only was it the most beautiful, but it was the END!  We drove west/north through Butte, Helena and Great Falls before crossing the border at Sweetgrass, MT/Coutts, AB.  We spent the first 3 hours of our drive winding through mountain passes covered with snow clouds and rainbows.

Crossing the border was unbelievably simple.  We had all of our documents ready to go, and we spent longer waiting to get up to the agent, than we actually spent with him.

We rolled into Calgary around 5pm, and thus began our lives as American's in Canada.

Things we learned today:
1.  Western Montana is much more exciting to drive through than Eastern Montana

2.  Alberta has railroad crossings in the middle of their highways and a World Heritage Site called "Head-Smashed-In-Buffalo-Jump" - and they think Americans are weird?

3.  Canadians are obsessed with Tim Hortons

4.  After being in Canada for only 3 hours and in public for about 20 minutes, I got my first official Canadian "EH?"

5.  iPhones are not cool when you turn off your data and have no wifi connection

6.  The metric system is going to make my life difficult in every aspect (driving, temperature, cooking, buying deli meat, getting gas, buying fabric) while we are here

  1. the metric system hasn't been too bad yet. If you have problems at the grocery just ask someone and laugh it off as a "silly american". They usually don't mind helping you. I still order deli meat by the pound and they don't mind at all.
